Reminder that you should learn how to can your own food as part of prepping. It is not that difficult, and before you know it you'll have a stockpile of canned goods. You can can almost anything from meat, veggies, fruits, water, soups, etc.
My mother has been canning for years and we have shelves & shelves of canned goods in the basement ready for when we need them.
I don't personally know jack about it but here are a couple guides to it, and if anyone has any questions about it feel free to ask and I will get an answer for you.
https://nifa.usda.gov/about-nifa/blogs/usdas-complete-guide-home-canning

https://www.amazon.com/Ball-Complete-Book-Home-Preserving/dp/0778801314/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Ball+canning+guide&qid=1649624954&sr=8-1

One piece of advice I do know is that when collecting jars for canning, you should make sure they're glass jars that have a brand name like Ball on them. You can't use just any ordinary glass jars, they have to be made for canning or otherwise they'll burst in the canning process. (You can actually use ordinary jars but that's not something beginners should try)

How long does canned food last, OP? What's the oldest jar your mom has stored? Do meat and fruits last more than one year?

Not op.

We got jam from anno Adolf, sorta. A whole decade? No prob. Same with salads (in vinegar). You can still consume it. The ingredients even keep their colour somewhat. Even keeping jam for two decades seems possible, in certain cases. With salad not so sure how it will taste.
Many canned and jarred foods can last when still vaccumised. Up to five years, or one year beyond expiration date I personally would not care, if they look and smell okay, I do not see sth that is worrying me. Only problem is their nutrimental value tends to sink to zero with time. You got a full tummy, that's it. Best is mixing canned foods with fresh foods, just in case.

As for fruits and meat - I buy jarred meat (pies) from a farmer. Nothing special, just a glass body and the typical metal lid. Can be kept for half a year at least, cool and dry. It never took me longer, I ate all the jars in time.
But when opened, I better finish the pie quickly, within a week (no conservation added). So untreated meat can stay fresh and tasty for a while but can spoil quickly the moment you open the jars (clean cutlery). Same with jarred fruits.
With a more sophisitcated method shelf life of a year should be possible. Can also be true for fruits and veggies, depends on which. The more juice the more delicate they are to handle iirc. The juice could start to ferment.
For longtime storage I'd say drying meat (ham, bacon) and fruits (raisins a.o.) is perhaps the better way. Not quite sure about vegs, but tomato sauce it possible afaik. Also using vinegar (pickled vegs) works. Some can be stored just so for a whole year, with no problems.

If you want to try preparing food, be carful. There is sth called 'botulinum toxin', produced by a bacterium. One can recognise the changes, but there are still ppl getting poisoned. Overpressure and smell can give a hint afaik.

I just canned cooked red meat with Lard. After cooking the meat, and putting it into Mason jars with lots of liquid lard it went into the freezer. Will be good for another year

Hey anons, in this thread I'll go over my misadventures in the process of making my fifth metal casting foundry. The previous 4 all failed(I was using steel on accident cuz I'm retarded) so I have high hopes that this iteration will be the one. Picrel is a hole I dug to house it, more pics in subsequent post since apparently my phone takes super high res images for no reason

We must have a society built for the people, by the people. I shall lead thee. The society would be structured as follows:
>the only laws that would be enforced would be the ten commandments.
>The only bills would only be for utilities, like electrical, water, gas, etc.
The social structure would be like this:
>if you don't like (gay sechs), then dont participate in (gay sechs). Nobody is forcing you to do anything.
Also, what are your opinions on deshodism? it was an old /pol/ thread from 4chan that the jannies fucked the guy for. never see him anymore.

A proper livestock guardian dog would of course be the best breed for defense, however these won't work for everyone. LGDs roam to an incredible degree so a lot of land and very high quality fencing is required

I think small dogs could function as good watchdogs for a flock of birds, provided they're raised around chickens from a young age and preferably aren't terriers. A chihuahua might unironically be good to have around

When I initially started homesteading I didn't understand how incredibly important breed is. We were given a bullmastiff / lab mix puppy and raised her around our chickens. She's fought off many foxes and racoons, however her lab blood makes her far too friendly with humans, and she escapes my land constantly to roam, so she can socialize with random people and dogs. I've spent thousands on fencing material however it seems impossible to keep this determined dog on my land. She has about two acres to run around in, 15 different freshwater springs to drink from, a private beach and lake, but she still feels the need to roam. Highly aggravating

We recently bought a great dane / rottweiler mix puppy and she's doing very well so far. She's getting along perfectly with the animals and both of her breeds are reputed to not roam, so hopefully we'll manage to train her to stay close and be a good guard dog one day

In this thread we discuss manufacturing during a SHTF scenario. Keep in mind electricity and fuel will be scarce and supply chains will be completely fucked. How will we make what we need? 3d printers and foundries for casting metal parts. Maybe mycelium composites for circuit boards.

60862 No.977

>>971
Why would you use a 3d printer for anything other than making precise molds for casting? The only other use I can think of other than useless trinkets is maybe replacement parts for gas masks if you want to warcrimemaxx if or when you make your own little society and have not so friendly neighbors. Actually, you could probably make most of a gas mask with a 3d printer, maybe even new filter. You've got me thinking, anon

Molds are the best use for them, but there are a couple of tools and parts that can be made of plastic in a pinch.
